  • 'MSG Varsity' debuts, wastes no time showcasing Northport

    Northport High School Marching Band

Cablevision's new "MSG Varsity" premiered Thursday with the first edition of "High School SportsDesk," during which co-host Jared Greenberg modestly announced "a new era in sports television."

Greenberg and co-host Shawna Ryan were bursting with youthful energy appropriate to the occasion, as was long-time MSG high school maven Mike Quick, who welcomed viewers after a musical greeting from the Bethpage High band.

In a shameless attempt to butter me up, the second highlight in the history of the show came from Northport's football upset of Connetquot. It worked!

This will be a fascinating experiment to observe in the coming weeks and months.

(Cablevision owns Newsday as well as MSG Varsity.)

(That's the Northport band in the picture, by the way.)

(Speaking of Northport, Newsday plans to live blog Saturday's game against Lindenhurst. Go Tigers!)
