MSG Varsity to cover high schools on Long Island and beyond

The primary topic of my Friday media extravaganza in the newspaper is Cablevision's new MSG Varsity channel (and interactive channel, and Web site), which launches Thursday.
It's a fascinating idea, and a massively expensive, logistically complicated one.
Covering a Knicks game mostly involves pointing a camera at the court and turning it on.
Covering every sport (and other activities) at every high school in the metropolian area will be a bit more of a challenge.
Among the activities to be featured are marching band. I wish we had had this kind of exposure when Northport High clearly had the best band in the land - at least in Nassau and Suffolk - in the late 1970s.
(Cablevision owns Newsday, which will contribute to Varsity's Long Island schools coverage.)
