New Meadowlands Stadium is the name, for now
It appears to be unlikely New Meadowlands Stadium will have a corporate sponsor's name slapped on it in time for its first event April 10 - a lacrosse tripleheader featuring Syracuse vs. Princeton, North Carolina vs. Virginia and Hofstra vs. Delaware.
(Tickets available here.)
But there remains a reasonable possibility the stadium will have a naming rights deal in place in time for the NFL regular-season opener - even though the market for such deals has been in the toilet for the past year or so.
I asked Mark Lamping, CEO of New Meadowlands Stadium, about this Thursday. Here is what he said:
"We’re still in conversations with several people, but nothing to discuss publicly."
Is he optimistic?
"I couldn’t put any odds on that. What we’re really going through is we’re going to get the right partner. It’s a question of when.
"What we’re not going to do is rush into a deal or accept a deal simply to have something done by the first football game. These are long term deals, 20 or 30 years."
Offers to date, he said, "would have been well under what we think the value is."
