Radio daze for football stars
It is remarkable in this era of Twitter, Facebook, blogs, texts and countless cable TV forums how much of the sports media agenda this football season has been driven by an early 20th century technology.
Read any newspaper early in the week and inevitably something said in a paid appearance on WFAN or 1050 ESPN has made news. That includes this past week, when Jets safety Jim Leonhard criticized fans for booing Mark Sanchez during introductions against the Bills.
Newspaper reporters often are forced to listen to the players they cover on the radio, what with Sanchez, for example, only talking at his locker on Wednesdays, never on Mondays.
That’s good for the local sports radio stations, but the attention does not come cheaply. The going rate starts in the neighborhood of $2,000 a week, but runs far more than that for starting quarterbacks.
In other words, let’s just say when it comes to quotes-to-dollars efficiency, Giants safety Antrel Rolle regularly sacks his quarterback, Eli Manning.
