    In olden times, the Rangers regularly played New Year's Eve home games, including in 1967, '69, '72, '75, '76, '77, '78, '80, '86, '87, '88 and '89, according to our friends at Hockey-Reference.com.

None in the past 20 years, though, despite a number of road games on Dec. 31. Anyone out there know why? I do not.

The only two times I have visited Times Square on New Year's Eve were following Rangers games.

In '78, I walked up Seventh Avenue after a 6-5 loss to the Atlanta Flames. In '80, I did so after a 6-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies.

Those franchises later moved, to Calgary and New Jersey.
