Subway Series old school: All three games on Ch. 9 or 11!
Baseball fans of a certain age remember when most Mets and Yankees games were on Channels 9 and 11.
Those days are long gone, of course, but both teams still appear a couple of dozen times a year on the channels, although now they have reversed positions, with the Mets on Ch. 11 and the Yanks on Ch. 9.
In fact, all three games in this weekend's Subway Series will be on one of the two local broadcast channels.
In the early days of cable television, the most popular reason given for putting some games on broadcast channels was that it allowed non-cable households to remain connected to their teams.
You don't hear that one much anymore, not with 96 percent of homes in the New York area subscribing to cable, satellite or phone company TV.
The biggest reason there still are Yankees and Mets games on local broadcast TV?
YES and SNY essentially subcontract them to offset some of the costs of carrying the majority of the teams' games on their channels.
