Tom Renney becomes first NY-area coach axed in '09
On Jan. 2, Newsday published a large, colorful graphic based on my assessment of the most and least vulnerable New York coaches and managers for 2009.
Starting with the most vulnerable, they were Joe Girardi, Scott Gordon, Jerry Manuel, Gary Carter (just threw him in for fun), Tom Renney, Tom Coughlin, the Jets coach TBA (an opening later filled by Rex Ryan) and Mike D'Antoni.
Of Renney, I wrote:
"You've made the Rangers consistent winners after years of floundering, but isn't it about time to get past two playoff rounds, Tom?"
Sigh. Guess I should have ranked him lower. Maybe I was thrown off track by the fact Renney might have been the most media-friendly coach in the area.
But I forgot . . . it's hockey! No one ever is safe in that sport.
