TV networks rise to baseball heaven

Before we all get caught up in the playoffs and the best regular-season finale in baseball history recedes into memory, let's pause for a quick thank you to ESPN, MLB Network and YES for excellent work in chronicling the madness Wednesday night.

The players provided the drama but the television networks stayed with them every step of the way with live action, highlights and updates.

Things did not work out so well for TBS, which went from the possibility of two play-in games Thursday to zero, and also lost the ratings power of the Red Sox.

No one outside Boston will shed a tear for them, though.

As the clock struck midnight I thought of my pals at the MLB Fan Cave in the East Village and how cool it would have been to be hanging out with them as they wrapped up a regular season in which they watched every single MLB game.

The finale was grand.
