WFAN boss on Carton: 'The idea is you don't cross a line'

What with WFAN's Ca-Boom finishing No. 1 among men 25-54 in the spring ratings, several readers have asked how their numbers compare to those of their predecessor, Imus, on WABC.

I was planning to stay away from a direct comparison because there is an apples-to-oranges element in doing so, but what the heck. You ask, I answer:

Boomer and Carton were No. 1 with an average of 6.5 percent of the audience in the morning, compared to Imus' No. 16 and 2.2.

Among all humans 25-54, Ca-Boom ranked ninth at 3.9 percent compared to Imus' No. 19 and 1.8.

Speaking of WFAN's morning show, I asked Mr. Mark Chernoff, the station's operations manager, whether he is concerned about Craig Carton's edgy material, which often straddles a fine line.

"I don’t think he’s doing anything different than he’s ever done," Chernoff said. "The idea is you don’t cross a line. He is very entertaining and Boomer is there and Boomer knows how to rein him in when he needs to rein him."

Does Chernoff sometimes cringe at what Carton says?

"I’m sometimes saying, 'Where is he going to go?" Chernoff said. "And then he doesn’t go there."
