Comcast swallows NBC Sports

How will Comcast's planned purchase of NBC Universal affect the sports TV landscape?

Too soon to tell, and there are months to go before the regulatory dust settles.

But it will be interesting to watch how the nation's biggest cable company seeks to wield its power as it adds existing rights to the likes of the NFL and the Olympics to its current, more modest stable, such as the NHL on Versus and the Golf Channel's slate.

There are legitimate concerns when distributors of TV also own chunks of the content they are distributing, and this is a huge new front in that battle.

One key story line will be Comcast's potential impact on NBC's expected tussle with ESPN/ABC over the 2014 and '16 Olympics.

Those rights figure to be granted before GE's deal with Comcast is complete, but the cable behemoth might do all that it can to avoid losing the Olympics just as it is taking possession of its new toy.
