Costas, Michaels call Mets game

(Commack) Bob Costas and former Newsday paper boy Al Michaels first met in 1980 and famously worked together in the 1998 movie "BASEketball."

They also each worked the 1995 World Series, but not together. That year's Fall Classic had its games split between ABC and NBC.

But never before have the two superstar sportscasters called a Major League Baseball game together. That will change Friday night when they work the Mets-Giants game for the MLB Network.

Exciting, perhaps even better, dare we say it, than "BASEketball?"

"I don’t think we could possibly top that," Costas said. "That’s obviously the gold standard of all broadcast pairings . . . I think Al would agree that 'BASEketball' stands as our proudest achievement."

Michaels said he recently received a $1.97 residuals check from the movie, which he called "the gift that keeps on giving."

But seriously, folks, the two old friends are looking forward to the event, which mostly is a just-for-the-fun-of-it novelty.

Costas is an MLBN regular. Michaels has not called a major league game since that '95 World Series.

Because MLB's games are blacked out in local markets, MLBN worked with SNY and Comcast Sports Net Bay Area to make sure Mets and Giants fans get to hear some of Costas and Michaels.

Costas will call the first inning-and-a-half on MLBN, followed by an inning-and-a-half of Michaels. Then the two will move to SNY's booth, and Costas will call the fourth inning and Michaels the fifth.

During those two innings, SNY's Gary Cohen and Ron Darling will appear on MLBN.

Costas will call the sixth inning on the Giants' home station, followed by Michaels for the seventh, while the Giants' announcers move to MLBN.

Costas will return to MLBN for the eighth inning, and Michaels will handle the ninth.

Simple!
