Dick Enberg did right by Juan Martin del Potro in the end

Naively, I was surprised by the number of readers of this blog and others upset by Dick Enberg's handling of the awards ceremony after Sunday's U.S. Open men's final.

I thought it was obvious the awkward moment in which he told Juan Martin del Potro he could not address the crowd in Spanish was a function of a producer whispering not-so-sweetly into his ear that time was short and the lady from Lexus was waiting.

I thought Enberg did a nice job by eventually ignoring that pressure and letting del Potro speak after all.

Anyway, while I was busy at the Giants' new training facility kibitzing with Michael Strahan, my fellow former Giants beat writer Lynn Zinser of the Times was getting the official CBS response here.

Turns out, yup, Dick was getting pressure applied directly into his ear.
