DirecTV offers 'Sunday Ticket' online to Manhattanites
Interesting experiment going on in Manhattan this season:
DirecTV is offering its NFL Sunday Ticket package online for people who do not or cannot subscribe to the satellite service, which has exclusive rights to the TV version.
Manhattan was chosen largely because for many people there it is physically impossible to subscribe to satellite TV.
The subplot is that this likely will lead to wider availability of Sunday Ticket on computers in future years, presumably beginning in 2010.
The cost is $350, even more than the already expensive TV Sunday Ticket, a popular package of out-of-market games.
The NFL recently extended DirecTV's exclusive rights to the package - long a huge source of annoyance for cable companies, including Cablevision, which owns Newsday - through the 2013 season.
