ESPN's 'Her Story' features young female athletes

My newspaper column includes an item on the ESPN special "Her Story" premiering Friday night and featuring varied stories on young female athletes, such as surfer Bethany Hamilton (right).

Kristin Huckshorn, the coordinating producer, told me one of the creative forces behind the "Her Story" Web site was Lucas Nickerson, whose mother, Paula, is the athletic director at Bishop McGann-Mercy High School in Riverhead.

I asked the host of the show, Hannah Storm, how her new gig at ESPN - primarily anchoring the live, morning SportsCenter - has been working out. Click below for that.

Storm said even though she is on later in the day than she was doing CBS' morning show, she still gets up at around 4 at her home in Connecticut for the 75-minute commute, and to prepare for the show, for which she does most of her own writing.

"It's a huge challenge and so gratifying because you really have ownership of that show," she said.
