Neil Best leaves no stone unturned in the world of sports media.

Following up on an inflammatory post about columnists

It seems I created a bit of a stir - and disappointed some fellow scribes I respect - with this post earlier on the relevance of general sports columnists in 21st century newspapers.

Let me try this again: My point had nothing to do with the actual people in that role, which include some of the most talented journalists in the business.

I simply believe that in an era in which anyone with a computer and an Internet connection can share his or her opinions with everyone on Earth, newspapers can offer a more useful service to readers via columnists with specialized areas of expertise, sources, etc.

The last thing I am suggesting is that editors remove their general columnists from the payroll, only that they be redeployed from the parachute-in world of generalists to the embedded world of specialists.
