Football is ratings king

It's too easy for media scribes this time of year comparing football and baseball ratings. We know how it's going to turn out, but we report this stuff anyway to remind readers of the reality that football is king - period.

Even in a strong baseball town like New York.

Take Sunday, when the Giants-Cardinals game on Fox mostly overlapped with the Yankees-Tigers game on Turner.

The football game averaged 12.1 percent of homes in the New York market; the baseball game averaged 7.2.

Nationally, a stinker of a Monday Night Football matchup between the Colts and Bucs blew away the baseball playoffs in the ratings.

But baseball should not be embarrassed. The NFL regularly beats all comers in the ratings race. Last TV season "Sunday Night Football" finished third in prime time to "American Idol" and "Dancing With the Stars," the best-ever showing for a sports program.

And CBS and Fox regularly do even better in the late Sunday afternoon window.
