Memo to public figures: Mag writers are not your friends

A completely apolitical, strictly media-based observation about Stanley McChrystal's current predicament:

It appears the general made the same mistake countless public figures have made over the decades, including a number of athletes.

(Tiger Woods, John Rocker and Jeremy Shockey come to mind, but there are many more.)

Because magazine writers tend to spend huge chunks of time with their subjects compared to newspaper and television reporters, their subjects often let down their guards and start thinking of them as pals rather than journalists.

This often leads to things being said that the subject did not expect to see in print.

I'd love to be a spider under the Oval Office desk for the meeting between McChrystal and President Obama.
