MSG taps Richter archives

Excluding Sunday nights on HBO, my favorite summertime TV show is "MSG's Vault," the next episode of which premieres Monday night and features former Rangers goaltender Mike Richter.

This is a good one. Highlighted footage includes Richter in the fourth game of his freshman season at Wisconsin, in which he allows a hat trick to Minnesota-Duluth's Brett Hull but wins the game anyway.

It also has him facing a barrage of shots as a member of the woeful 1988-89 Denver Rangers.

Finally, there are highlights of his bizarre NHL debut, in which Phil Esposito called him up from the minors in the spring of '89 to face the mighty Penguins - with the Rangers facing a 3-0 playoff series deficit!

Richter lost that game, but stuck with the big club in '89-90.

Al Trautwig interviewed Richter for the look back.
