Watchdog

Neil Best leaves no stone unturned in the world of sports media.

Newsday, every day

Back in WatchDog's heyday in the late 2000s, I enjoyed basking in page views glory, but at the price of many hours alone in the basement with a television, a radio, back issues of the Sports Business Journal and my collection of Super Bowl telephones from the mid-90s.

But over the past few months I equally have enjoyed yielding much of that blogging time in favor of returning to in-person sports coverage.

The editors graciously have trusted me with actual NFL, NBA and NCAA games involving live athletes and coaches, even though I often have required extra study time to figure out what was going on.

Most recently, that has involved commuting to the NCAA East Regional in Newark, the city where it all began for me two days before the start of the epic 1960 World Series.

The best part has been reconnecting with Newsday sports colleagues and being reminded of their talent, hard work and professionalism from an up-close perspective.

Please do read their stuff here, today and every today. And in the printed version of the paper as well. Whichever you prefer. Both would be even better. I'm pretty sure we have an iPad app, too.
