NHL should stay in Olympics

There are many good reasons for the NHL to sever its relationship with the Olympics after Sunday, as articulated by commish Gary Bettman (Cornell Class of '72) and some of the league's most prominent team executives, including the Devils' Lou Lamoriello (losing coach in the Cornell-Providence ECAC quarterfinal of 1979).

But none of those reasons is reason enough for the league not to show up in Sochi - where Alex Ovechkin and his countrymen are threatening to play whether or not the NHL approves.

Bottom line: The Olympics are great for hockey, and thus good for the NHL.

Here are takes on that subject from Newsday's own Mark Herrmann and from the NYT.

Enjoy U.S.-Switzerland this afternoon and Canada-Russia tonight.
