No eye on Tiger at Open

ESPN conducted a media conference call to discuss the U.S. Open the other day, and naturally the first question was about . . . well, you know who.

“He will be missed,’’ analyst Curtis Strange said of Eldrick Woods. “But the way I look at it, when that first tee shot is hit Thursday morning, his name won’t be mentioned.’’

Really, not at all? “We’re going to try not to,’’ Strange said. “Unless there is some relevant information concerning a scoring record which he owns or some type of something you can relate to him, I don't hear it mentioned a great many times.’’

Fair enough, but think about it: As he fades farther and farther off the radar screen Woods for now has been reduced to a historical figure, referenced as any fellow past winner – Julius Boros? Orville Moody? – might be. Fore!
