Phillips revisits Alomar

Steve Phillips is four months into his gig as a morning co-host on Sirius XM’s Mad Dog Radio, a role that at times confronts him with ghosts of jobs past.

Take Friday, when he found himself interviewing newly elected Hall of Fame player Roberto Alomar, whose time with the Mets in 2002 and ’03 was a glaring blot on his career.

To his credit Phillips, the man who traded for Alomar as the Mets’ GM, got right to it.

After Alomar insisted he loved New York and that “every loss that we had in New York, I took it real personal,’’ Phillips said this:

“I’ve always been curious, when you look back at that and you’ve had time to gain some perspective – now, I know you had a groin injury at some point during the course of the seasons – but where do you think things went wrong?’’

Said Alomar: “We didn’t click as a team. Maybe we were trying a little too much. I think sometimes when you play in New York, it’s big expectations and we didn’t relax as ballplayers and didn’t click as a team.’’
