RIP, Bubba Smith

BUBBA SMITH, Baltimore Colts
Bubba Smith, the standout Michigan State defensive end who was drafted first overall in 1967, was found dead on Aug. 3, 2011 in his Baldwin Hills, Calif. home. Smith went on to win the 1971 Super Bowl with the Baltimore Colts, but found greater fame after his football career as an actor. He was best known for his role as Moses Hightower in the "Police Academy" series. Read Newsday's obituary for Bubba Smith

When I heard the sad news about Bubba Smith's death, I first recalled him as a football player, second as a star of the old Miller Lite TV ads.

But I'm 50. Many people a bit younger than me remember Smith most for his recurring role as Moses Hightower in the "Police Academy" movies of the 1980s.

Check this out: Early Thursday morning the top three items on Google Trends' Hot Searches were "Hightower," "Police Academy" and "Barack Obama," in that order.

Thursday was the President's 50th birthday, but he was beaten out by a fictional character from a long-ago, famously silly series of movies.

Is this a great country, or what?
