Next time you're watching one of those sublimely dramatic NFL highlight reels, think of Ed Sabol (above, right). Along with son Steve, he pioneered the use of sideline cameras, microphones on coaches and countless other innovations that captured the intensity of the NFL. (Credit: NFL/Al Messerschmidt Archive)

I just watched a first-rate documentary, "Ed Sabol: King of Football Movies," whose next showing is at 2 p.m. Saturday, timed to the induction of the founder of NFL Films into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Well deserved, by the way.

(The show premiered Monday. But I was busy playing softball. And come to think of it, I don't have the NFL Network on my TV anyway.)

It is an excellent show, as you would expect of NFL Films, especially on this topic, full of a startling collection of home movies featuring a guy who loved being on camera as much as turning cameras on others.

Speaking of NFL Films and the NFL Network . . . Not all is well in suburban Philadelphia. Check out this wow-inducing story by Paul Domowitch of the Philly Daily News.
