SNY to carry 12 Cosmos games - seven new, five old
No one expects the Cosmos to take the New York sports world by storm when they return to NASL action after a 29-year break.
But the team’s visibility got a boost this week with the news SNY would carry all seven home games – three live, four on next-day or same-day delay – beginning with live coverage of Saturday’s opener at Hofstra.
JP Dellacamera and Janusz Michallik will be the announcers.
SNY secured the games in a partnership with the Cosmos’ primary TV rights-holder, sparsely distributed One World Sports, that also includes five “classic” games from the team’s mid-1970s to early ‘80s glory days.
Gary Morgenstern, SNY’s senior VP of programming, said the combination of old and new was key to the deal.
“The whole package only makes sense when you look it from the perspective of history,’’ he said. “What do the Cosmos mean today if you don’t take into account that history?’’
The series begins Aug. 11 with the Cosmos hosting the Rowdies (on what appears to be a Tampa-area telecast) at Yankee Stadium on July 14, 1976 – with one goal straddling the grass and infield dirt near first base!
Spoiler alert: Pele scores twice in a 5-4 victory, including a nifty header.
