Steve Phillips' career revival takes Sirius turn

Steve Phillips has spent the past year working to rebuild his personal and professional lives after ESPN fired him in the wake of an affair with a young production assistant.

The latter process took another notable stride this past week when Sirius XM Satellite Radio hired him to co-host its morning show with Gary Williams on Chris Russo’s Mad Dog Radio channel, starting Monday.

Phillips said the new job also will help him personally, the early hours giving him time to participate in his children’s activities.

As happy as he is with the gradual rehabilitation of his career, he said, “I feel that more with my daily recovery on a personal level, that things are going in the right direction.’’ (Phillips underwent treatment for sex addiction.)

The new job will preclude him from filling in as a host on WFAN and appearing in Mike Francesa’s afternoon show on the station, visibility that helped make Phillips a viable candidate for Sirius.

Phillips expressed “tremendous gratitude’’ to Francesa and operations manager Mark Chernoff for providing “part of the steppingstone for getting this opportunity.’’

Where does Phillips go from here? He has resisted speculating, or worrying.

“I really have surrendered the outcome of my career,’’ he said, adding that thinking about the future “won’t do me much good in my recovery.’’
