Toomer was inspired by Papa

This is sort of interesting: Amani Toomer told me Thursday during my interview for this story about his media career that one reason he was up for calling high school games on MSG Varsity was he recalled future Giants play-by-play man Bob Papa working one of Toomer's games at De La Salle High back in the day.

He figured if Papa could start on high schools on the road to a long, successful media career, why not him?

Papa told me that what Toomer recalled was his days on the old SportsChannel America Gatorade High School Game of the Week from 1989-92. Former Dolphin Glenn Blackwood was his analyst.

BTW, the guy who called the weekly high school basketball games on the channel was another Fordham alum destined for big things in New York sports media: Mike Breen.
