To the surprise of no one, the Yankees' return to the World Series after a six-year hiatus provided an early ratings boost.

Early returns for Game 1 showed it was watched in 11.9 percent of U.S. homes and by 19.5 million viewers, an indication this easily will be the highest rated Series since the Red Sox won in 2004.

The 11.9 figure was up from 9.2 for Game 1 last year.

Philadelphia recorded a 44.5 rating - 25 percent better than it did for Game 1 in 2008, which also featured the Phillies.

The New York market was second at 29.7 - better than it did for all six games in '03 and Games 1 through 6 in 2001.

(Tangential aside: There have been 10 regular-season NFL windows this season that attracted more viewers than Game 1 of the World Series did.)
