The weather in the city can get pretty frightful in the winter, whether it's snow, sleet or sub-zero temperatures.
But with a stroke of luck, the chilly climate can give you a day off to enjoy the snow and wintry weather.
Venture out -- or stay in -- to make the most of a snowy day.
Eat at a new restaurant
One of the best times to try a new or popular restaurant is when the city shuts down due to bad weather. Fewer people venture outside, and restaurants are often desperate for guests. Take this opportunity to visit one of the eateries listed in our recent openings roundup.
When it snows, there's one great thing to do: Go sledding. If you're brave enough to venture outdoors, grab a sled -- or your garbage can lid -- and head to one of the many beloved sledding hills in the city for some high-speed fun. Check out Central Park (pictured), Prospect Park, and more awesome sledding spots here.
Hit up a tiki bar
If you can't have warm, tropical weather outside, you can at least pretend you do inside. Zombie Hut in Carroll Gardens is tiki-themed and is a good place to hide away as you sip on a beer. On Wednesday, Mr. Purple in the Lower East Side for one night only is having a "Tropical Tiki Takeover" with four tiki cocktails, a tropical playlist of reggae, Jimmy Buffet, ska and other summer-like tunes, tiki decorations and its staff will be dressed for the beach (and encourage you to do the same).
Take a spa-cation
Queens' favorite house of relaxation, Spa Castle, has a Manhattan outpost called Premier 57 (115 E. 57th St.). It's a good way to get warm, really warm, when outside is nasty. A day pass, which is $75, give you access to hydrotherapy pools, saunas, steam rooms and a swim-up bar. Other features include a sleeping room and a cafe.
Organize and spring clean
If you don't want to go out, now's a good time to get your apartment in order. Throw out anything you haven't used or worn in the past year, things that you don't love, and scrub and sanitize places that need some attention. It will be nice in the spring and summer when you have more room and don't have to worry about thoroughly cleaning.
Get cozy at a fireplace bar or restaurant
What's better than cozying up next to a fireplace on a snowy day? There are plenty of bars and eateries in the city that have one, so head to The Fillmore Room (pictured), Art Bar, SakaMai and more to warm up on a cold day.

Plan a trip
Sip on something warm
After wandering around in the snow, enjoy a much-deserved warm drink. Try a unique take on the classic hot chocolate at these city spots, or head to these cafes for tea time. After the clock strikes 5 p.m., sip on a warm cocktail at Eataly's winter pop-up Baita and more local bars serving up hot alcoholic beverages.
Shop for summer clothes
You're still bundling up in your winter coat now, but shopping for bathing suits and light, summer clothes is a good way to forget the snow is falling. Let your imagination wander to the warmer months, and start stocking up online.
Get cultured at a museum
A day off from work gives you the opportunity to finally hit up that museum exhibit you've been eyeing for months. Head to the Brooklyn Museum (pictured), The Met and more to get your art fix.
