One of the largest east coast food wholesalers will offer home delivery on its inventory for the first time to people within 50 miles of its Bronx headquarters.

Baldor Specialty Foods officials announced yesterday that they will let people order produce, meat, dairy and other staples online with next-day delivery. This is part of an effort to ease the burden on grocery stores that may be facing shortages and make it easier for people to stay home.

Baldor typically supplies only restaurants and food service establishments, but now turns its delivery system and staff toward home delivery. This follows Mayor Bill de Blasio’s decision to close restaurants and bars except for delivery and takeaway services.

“We have never considered doing this before, but in times of crisis, everything must be put on the table and considered,” Baldor CEO TJ Murphy said. “Our main priority is to provide food to the communities we serve – and we will do whatever it takes to make that happen.”
