Eat and Drink Summer wine time: Rosé, whites and reds to drink now By Georgia Kral Updated July 6, 2016 10:14 AM Print Share fbShare Tweet Email It's wine time. When the weather becomes unbearably hot and the city streets are sticky with people, there's only one sensible thing to do: grab a bottle and start drinking. Some love beer and others icy cocktails when it's hot, but wine in the summer is great because it's thirst-quenching and easy to drink. Here are some bottles you need to get now, hand-picked by two of the city's best wine aficionados: Jean-Luc Le Dû, former sommelier at Daniel and owner of Le Dû's Wines, and Matt Wong, general manager at Sherry-Lehmann. This white is "full of succulent peach and melon," he said, and has "just a hint of effervescence." "This specific Burgundy is so rich in flavor and acidity, it is completely satisfying to the pallet," said Wong. "It embodies hints of fresh florals and citrus aromas." He suggests pairing it with grilled chicken, summer salads and any seafood. "The nose is all about apple, honeydew melon and a slight spiciness (white pepper). On the palate it is medium in body and dry with good concentration of flavors of baked apple, followed by melon, citrus and a long pleasant finish." Wong recommends this wine with appetizers or on its own. Available at Sherry-Lehmann Wines, $21.95 Clos Alivu Patrimonio Rosé 2015 Photo Credit: Le Dû's Wines This wine from the island of Corsica, part of France, has "juicy red cherry and Mediterranean floral notes," said Le Dû. The "elegant" rosé, he said, "has a crisp, lively texture and is made from 100% Niellucciu, a local clone of Italy's Sangiovese grape." Available at Le Dû's Wines, $22.99 Domaine Fontsainte Gris de Gris Rosé 2015 Photo Credit: Le Dû's Wines This rosé is "based mostly on the pink-skinned Grenache Gris grape," said Le Dû, giving it "a slightly waxy texture and vivid notes of peach, strawberry and white flowers." It is "excellent with exotically-seasoned shellfish and white meat dishes," he added. Available at Le Dû's Wines, $14.99 Primorska, Čotar Vitovska 2011 Photo Credit: Le Dû's Wines This Slovenian white wine is "subtly-perfumed" and "wraps a core of crisp red pear with layers of jasmine and Earl Grey," says Le Dû. "White wines from this part of Slovenia are traditionally fermented with skin contact, like red wines, giving the wines added body and texture," he said. Available at Le Dû's Wines, $29.99 Bernard Baudry 'Les Granges' Chinon 2014 Photo Credit: Le Dû's Wines Le Dû says this wine is "a true thirst-quencher." "This light red displays subtle herbal and graphite notes, and luscious red currant fruit," he said, adding that it's "excellent with a slight chill." Try pairing it with seafood, he said, or "with a sunset and your favorite person." The flavor, he said, displays "tangy raspberry, red cherry and warm spice notes." "This Bordeaux blend has a nose that is big and fruity with aromas of baked fruits like plum and black cherry. On the palate it is all about black fruits that give way to black licorice flavor and hints of smoked oak." Available at Sherry-Lehmann Wines, $25.95 Cloudline Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley) 2014 Photo Credit: Sherry-Lehmann Wines Pinot Noir is one of the world's most versatile food wines, says Wong of Sherry-Lehmann, making it a great choice for summer cuisine. "This wine has complexity, elegance and beauty in color," he said. "Because the tannins are low, you can even put a slight chill on this wine for optimal enjoyment," he added.
