Amy Schumer’s ‘plus size’ drama continues as Lena Dunham, Melissa McCarthy speak out

These women have Amy Schumer’s back.

The fallout from Glamour magazine’s “plus size” debacle continued Thursday, with Melissa McCarthy appearing to comment on the cover in an Instagram post.

McCarthy, who was listed alongside fellow actress-comedian Schumer on the Glamour cover of the magazine’s “Chic at Any Size” special issue as “Women Who Inspire Us,” said on Instagram: “We have to stop categorizing and judging women based on their bodies. We are teaching young girls to strive for unattainable perfection instead of feeling healthy and happy in their own skin.” The 45-year-old star of the new movie “The Boss” posted the message alongside a photograph of a mirror labeled with the warning, “Reflections in this mirror may be distorted by socially constructed ideas of ‘beauty.’”

McCarthy’s statement echoed the words of Lena Dunham, who told E! News on Wednesday night: “I think what Amy was really saying was just like let’s remove the labels and she was just saying like why do you have to categorize our bodies even if it’s in the context of ‘Let’s celebrate these women who are different.’”

Dunham, creator, writer and star of HBO’s “Girls,” was speaking from The Hollywood Reporter’s “35 Most Powerful People in New York Media,” where she was honored for her feminist newsletter Lenny, along with Jenni Konner.

Of magazines and “special issues,” Dunham said, “The fact is, every issue should be an issue that contains a multitude of bodies and a multitude of races and a multitude of gender identities.”

Meanwhile, in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar published Thursday, Jennifer Lawrence had a few words about society’s distorted view on body image. “I think we’ve gotten so used to underweight that when you are a normal weight it’s like, ‘Oh, my God, she’s curvy.’ Which is crazy,” the 25-year-old told the magazine.
