LeFou might not be the first character that springs to mind at the mention of “Beauty and the Beast,” but he’s set to become uniquely historic.
When the live-action remake hits movie screens this month LeFou, played by Josh Gad, will be Disney’s first openly gay character, according to director Bill Condon.
Describing a subplot between Gaston (the movie’s antagonist, played by Luke Evans) and his dithering sidekick, Condon recently told Attitude magazine that “LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston. ... He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings.”
The director added that “it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”
“Beauty and the Beast” stars Emma Watson and Dan Stevens and graces the cover of Attitude’s April issue. Expect it on newsstands March 17, the same day as the movie’s release.
