Taylor Swift may write songs about exes, but do her exes write songs about her, too?
That is apparently the case with the new Calvin Harris-penned song, “Olé,” released on Friday. Swift’s ex’s song, performed by the singer John Newman, is told from the perspective of a new man in a woman’s life. The song’s lyrics suggest she is trying to hide the man from her current boyfriend.
“But I see online that you’ve begun to be / A good girl and take trips with your boyfriend / Being attentive, continue to pretend / But no, cause there’s no telling how far you can go / You’ve hidden my name on your phone so you can / Call me to tell me you’ve been going through hell.”
Whether Harris is referring to Swift and her new bae Tom Hiddleston has been called into question. US Weekly reports multiple sources close to the producer claim the song was recorded months ago, before “Hiddleswift” became a thing.
The Tropicalia-inflected pop song has an infectious beat and grooving melody that begs for repeated listens, and we suspect lots of Swifties will be streaming it over and over again, looking for clues.
