Rapper provocateur Kanye West, whose outspoken antics have often been attributed to creative eccentricity, remained in a Los Angeles hospital on Thanksgiving after having been admitted Monday as a psychiatric emergency.
People magazine said Thursday that West’s wife, reality TV star Kim Kardashian, 36, was with him at UCLA Medical Center for hours on Thanksgiving morning before leaving to join her family’s holiday gathering, being held at the suburban Calabasas home of her half-sister, Kylie Jenner. Kardashian and West’s two children — daughter North, 3, and son Saint, who turns 1 on Dec. 5 — reportedly are with Kardashian’s mother, Kris Jenner.
Kardashian had been scheduled to appear at the 20th annual Angel Ball, held Monday at Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan, but instead rushed to her husband’s side. The event would have been her first professional appearance since she was robbed in Paris in early October.
People and other outlets, citing anonymous sources, agreed that West’s condition appeared severe enough that he is expected to remain hospitalized for several days more.
On Saturday, West, 39, had arrived 90 minutes late to a Sacramento concert, and shortly after it began launched into a 17-minute stream-of-consciousness tirade before leaving the stage and cutting short the show. He canceled the following day’s concert, and then Monday called off the remainder of his Saint Pablo Tour, which had been set to conclude Dec. 30 and 31 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
Around 1:20 p.m. Monday, paramedics responded to a call from the Los Angeles home of West’s trainer, Harley Pasternak. TMZ.com, quoting a police report, said West’s personal physician, Dr. Michael Farzam, had called 911 requesting help for a 39-year-old male named “Jim Jones” who was suffering from “temporary psychosis due to sleep deprivation and dehydration.”
The police report added that Farzam placed the patient on a 5150 psychiatric hold, referring to section 5150 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code. Under this, someone exhibiting a “mental disorder” or who is “gravely disabled” may be taken to a medical facility “for 72-hour treatment and evaluation.” Anonymous sources have disputed the police report, claiming that while West was hospitalized as a “psychiatric emergency” due to sleep deprivation and dehydration, it was not a 5150 hold.
