Subway performers take over Grand Central Terminal during pre-Grammy event

The focus was on New York City’s underground talent Sunday hours before the hottest names in the music industry congregated at Madison Square Garden for the 60th anniversary of the Grammy Awards.

An event held by streaming app Live.Me took several of the city’s subway performers off the platform to perform on a pop-up stage at a Grand Central Terminal event hosted by Wyclef Jean. The singers, dancers and musicians were chosen from more than 100 local artists who participated in the app’s performance competition earlier this month.

The Hot Hand Band and Waffle Crew, both Brooklyn-based, Leggoh LaBeija and others were asked to perform ahead of the Grammys because they had the most popular performance videos during the competition, which streamed live from subway stations across the city, according to Live.Me. Folk singer Natalie Gelman from the West Village was awarded the top prize — $20,000 and tickets to the Grammys ceremony — on Sunday.

Here’s a look at the performances that lit up Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central.
