‘Jagged Little Pill’ Broadway theater and start date revealed

“Jagged Little Pill,” a new musical built around the songs of Alanis Morissette’s popular 1995 album of the same name with a book by Diablo Cody (“Juno”), is set to play Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre in the fall, with preview performances beginning on Nov. 3 in anticipation of a Dec. 5 opening night. The casting has not been officially announced yet, but Elizabeth Stanley (“On the Town,” “Million Dollar Quartet”) led the cast of the world premiere last year in Cambridge.

Beatles tribute band joins Broadway residence series

Rain, a Beatles tribute band that played Broadway in 2010, has joined this summer’s “In Residence on Broadway” series at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, which debuted last week with the English singer-songwriter Morrissey. In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the release of “Abbey Road,” Rain will present “The Best of Abbey Road Live!” (which will also include songs from other Beatles albums) July 16-21.

‘1776’ set for Broadway revival

“1776,” the crowd-pleasing 1969 musical about the debates leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress, will be revived in spring 2021 by the Roundabout Theatre Company. The production will be directed by Diane Paulus (“Pippin,” “Waitress”).

Drama Critics Circle announces annual awards

Theater awards season continued this week with the announcement by the Drama Critics Circle (of which I am a member) that it named “The Ferryman” as best play, “What the Constitution Means to Me” as best American play and “Tootsie” as best musical. (Please note that I did not vote in any way for “Tootsie.”) Special citations were given to Off-Broadway’s Irish Repertory Theatre, Page 73 (a company which specializes in assisting young playwrights) and the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene’s Yiddish-language production of “Fiddler on the Roof.”
