Entertainment 'Late Show with David Letterman,' in pictures By VERNE GAY email@example.com May 13, 2015 4:11 PM Print Share fbShare Tweet Email "Late Show with David Letterman" ends May 20, but how will we remember this long-running classic? Well, there's something called YouTube, along with CBS.com, Hulu and a million other places I'm not thinking of at the moment. But there are also our own personal memories. And more often than not, those can be revived by a single picture. In the May 5 edition of Daily Dave, I look at just a few of those pictures -- I may not remember the episodes they were from, but the images lives on ... and on. Stephen Colbert Photo Credit: CBS With the new guy. Jay Leno and Oprah Winfrey Photo Credit: CBS A Super Bowl commercial to remember ... Madonna Photo Credit: CBS / John Paul Filo Madge! The most memorable of guests? Or the most bleeped? Or both? Her first (in)famous visit was in '94. This one from 2003 was a quieter, more reflective moment. If that is possible... Harry Joseph Letterman Photo Credit: CBS New father, new son in 2003. Warren Zevon Photo Credit: CBS / Barbara Nitke Warren Zevon on Oct. 30, 2002. A great Letterman favorite, Zevon died the following year on Sept. 7. Dave Matthews Photo Credit: CBS / Jeffrey R. Staab Dave Matthews, shown on July 15, 2002, doesn't make a whole lot of stops on the late-night circuit so, once seen, he's most definitely remembered. And yes, that's a rooftop -- a performance idea that was to inspire another late night host, Jimmy Fallon, on his opening show. Dan Rather Photo Credit: CBS / John P. Filo Dave and Dan, days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. An emotional broadcast for both. Cher Photo Credit: CBS / Alan Singer What was this very special thing Dave had with Cher -- famously once described with a word that cannot be re-printed in this space? This photo is obviously from happier times, after amends were made. Johnny Carson Photo Credit: CBS / Tony Esparza Hmm, this one is familiar, no? Yes, Johnny Carson makes his last late-night talk show appearance, on May 13 1994. The Yankees Photo Credit: CBS / Alan Singer The Yanks give Dave a champagne shower in October 1996. Prince Photo Credit: CBS The Artist Formerly Known as Prince and Currently Known as Prince, in 1996. Peter O'Toole Photo Credit: CBS Dave ... no, take that back. Pete learns how to handle a dromedary, or remasters the skill, on a "Late Show" trip to London. And once seen, never forgotten. This is of course the great Peter O'Toole. Or Lawrence of Arabia? Broadway performers Photo Credit: CBS The cast of..."Rent." In the good ol' days, the "Late Show" was a good neighbor -- to the many Broadway shows nearby. ("Cats" was just across the street.) Chris Rock Photo Credit: CBS / Alan Singer Some guy named Chris Rock on June 13, 1994. Dave laughed hard. The audience did, too. Bill Murray Photo Credit: CBS / Alan Singer Bill Murray defaces the furniture on Aug. 30, 1993. And it was only the first taping.
