Madonna gives surprise performance at New York City’s Stonewall Inn

Music legend Madonna made a surprise appearance New Year’s Eve at the historic Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, performing two singalongs with the crowd and addressing the upcoming 50th anniversary of the 1969 riot there that sparked the gay-rights movement.

Newsday contributor Frank Lovece reports that in online videos taken by audience members, Madonna, 60, speaks from a small stage about the ongoing fight against LGBTQ discrimination, kibitzes with the crowd and leads them in her 1989 hit “Like a Prayer” and Elvis Presley’s 1961 classic “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”

Accompanying her on both songs is her 13-year-old son, David Banda, on acoustic guitar.

“I made it Thru The Wilderness,” Madonna tweeted on New Year’s Day. “Back stage at STONEWALL INN!! 2019 came. in with a Bang!!”
