What is ‘Camp’? See celebrities define style at the Met Gala

Celebrities showed off their best camp looks at the 2019 Met Gala on Monday.

The theme for the annual elite fashion event was “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” a reference to Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, “Notes on ‘Camp.’ ” What is considered camp isn’t clear cut. The abstract stylization is embodied by celebrities like Cher, designers like Donatella Versace and gatherings like dog shows, according to the New York Times. 

Camp, at its core, can be interpreted in a variety of ways, which made for some interesting celebrity looks.

“Whether it’s pop camp, queer camp, high camp or political camp — Trump is a very camp figure — I think it’s very timely,” curator Andrew Bolton told the Times. “Much of high camp is a reaction to something.”
