With Broadway reopening and much more on the horizon, New York City is in for a bustling autumn. NYC & Company is giving New Yorkers a look at what they can expect to see opening (and reopening) for the fall season around the city. 

Art & Museums

Due to its successful summer run, the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit New York will make its return to New York City for an additional run. From Nov. 17, 2021 through Jan. 2, 2022, New Yorkers can dive into the works of Vincent Van Gogh in a truly immersive experience that is spellbinding to all of the senses. 

Earlier this month, Banksy:Genius or Vandal? opened up at 526 Sixth Avenue. The exhibit is on display through Thanksgiving weekend and takes a look controversial artistic career of Banksy while showcasing 80 of his authenticated artworks.

From now through Oct. 31, the New York Botanical Garden is hosting KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature featuring work by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, including two new outdoor monumental sculptures: “Dancing Pumpkin” and “I Want to Fly to the Universe.”

At the MoMA you can find Automania, which takes an in-depth look at automobiles and the conflicted feelings that developed in response to cars and car culture in the 20th century. Automania will be on display until Jan. 2, 2022.

At MoMA PS1, you can find Greater New York, the space’s signature survey of artists living and working in the NYC area. This is the museum’s fifth edition of the exhibit and will feature the work of 47 artists and collectives that were born and made right here in New York City. The exhibit will make its return on Oct. 7 and will run through April 18, 2022.

Starting Oct. 1, the New-York Historical Society is hosting Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG). Based on the popular Tumblr and best-selling book of the same name, the exhibition takes an expansive look at Brooklyn’s own Ruth Bader Ginsburg, highlighting her efforts throughout her career to protecting civil rights and equal opportunity for all. The exhibition is on display through Jan. 23, 2022. Be sure to also swing through City Point to see the new RBG statue!

Performing Arts

Broadway is back and theater-lovers are excited! This month saw the return of favorite musicals The Lion King, Chicago, Wicked, Hadestown, Waitress, Hamilton, and Come From Away. There are also a handful of brand-new shows that will debut including Thoughts of a Colored ManDiana and Mrs. Doubtfire.

Later this fall, just outside of New York City will be the opening of the UBS Arena at Belmont Park. In addition to being the future home of the New York Islanders, there are several shows in the lineup for the fall and winter seasons. Some things to put on your calendar include WWE Monday Night RAW (Nov. 29), Genesis (Dec. 10) and Trans-Siberian Orchestra (Dec. 18), just to name a few.

Attractions

For thrill-seekers, a brand new roller coaster has opened up at Coney Island. The Phoenix Family Thrill Roller Coaster stands 68 feet tall and adds an exciting new addition to Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park for the rest of the fall season.

A different kind of thrill-seeker can keep their eyes peeled for SUMMIT, which is opening at One Vanderbilt on Oct. 21. The iconic skyscraper takes visitors to the highest vantage point in Midtown with views of the Chrysler Building, Empire State Building and north to Central Park, and glass floor ledges that overhang over 1,000 feet above Madison Avenue.

Looking to relax? QC NY is a new spa that is slated to open up this year on Governors Island. Afterward, explore New York City’s unique history via live actors, immersive media and museum galleries through RiseNY by Running Subway, a new entertainment attraction opening later this year.

Outdoor activities

This past spring Little Island opened up at Pier 55. The free outdoor space became a popular spot during the summer months and still expects to be a bustling location as the weather cools down. Food and drinks are available for purchase onsite.

Also this summer Hudson River Park opened a redesigned Pier 76. The space includes outdoor flexible space, numerous interpretive plaques outlining the as well as a propeller from the SS United States passenger liner.
