U2 played on the Shuttle platform at Grand Central

U2 gave some subway riders a free performance last night in Grand Central Terminal. Wearing common street performer clothes (with Bono and The Edge sporting sunglasses and hats), the band played on the S train platform at Grand Central.

Bono and his crew are in New York to perform on The Tonight Show Friday night. Jimmy Fallon was also seen on the platform with the band, suggesting this is maybe an impromptu gig to promote their Friday night performance and their upcoming tour.

The band is in the midst of preparing for their world tour, iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE, which is set to start May 14 in Vancouver. The band will be performing at Madison Square Garden this summer from July 18 to July 31.

Posting to their Instagram page for the first time last night, U2 shared a promo video for the tour, captioning the post with “10 days. Countdown to iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour 2015 #U2ieTour.”

Chef Mario Batali also caught the show, posting this photo to Instagram.
