The film, "Mapplethorpe," will be about photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (to be played by actor Matt Smith), according to Deadline Hollywood. Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith were together for numerous years both romantically and as friends, as Pitchfork reports. Smith also depicts their relationship in her award-winning 2010 memoir, "Just Kids." Mamet posted an Instagram photo of the real Smith and Mapplethorpe Wednesday, thanking the writer and director of the film, Ondi Timoner, "for the honor & opportunity to play" one of her icons, the actress and musician said. Deadline Hollywood reports that filming will begin this summer and will be backed by the Mapplethorpe Foundation, a nonprofit organization that represents the photographer's work.
