Last year, Angelina Dreem launched Powrplnt as a way to introduce high school students, as well as adults, to creative software like Photoshop and Ableton Live so they can make their own music, videos and even gifs. "I taught myself all the digital art stuff that I know," said Dreem, 29, a digital artist who lives in Chinatown. "I was inspired to create something that would provide access to that learning." The program kicked off last summer at Bushwick's Steam Gallery, with two months of free programming. Next up, you can find Powrplnt in Chelsea at "Alone Together," a site-specific exhibition by New York artist Ryder Ripps at Red Bull Studios New York. Throughout its six-week run, the exhibition will feature a temporary classroom that will host free workshops on Saturdays in Web design, Illustrator, Ableton Live and 3-D printing, a free computer lab on Sundays and, through a partnership with the alternative high school City As School, teach students courses in digital art production two days a week. "I just want to empower people and have them making things and sharing them," Dreem said. "I see my work as social practice, to create the space for people to use technology to have creative dialogue." Beyond gallery pop-ups, Dreem ultimately wants Powrplnt to have a permanent space in New York City to bring together a like-minded community and provide access to free digital arts skills -- which, in this quickly evolving Internet age, are becoming increasingly invaluable. "An artist today needs to know more than how to hold a paintbrush," Dreem said. "If you don't have the tools to translate your idea into reality, you just get stuck." If you go: “Alone Together” runs now through April 12 at Red Bull Studios New York, 220 W. 18th St. Public viewing hours are Thursday-Sunday, noon-7 p.m. For more information, visit alonetogether.network.
