Menswear Dog talks style, NYC and slobber

Menswear Dog is making you look bad. Yes, the Shiba Inu is probably dressed better than you right now.

The Internet’s — or the world’s — best dressed dog is probably Bodhi, popularized by his stylish owners, David Fung and Yena Kim.

While we can’t all look as stlish as the furry fashionisto, Bodhi (and his stylists) have released a book of fashion advice: “The New Classics: Fresh Looks for the Modern Man.”

Dog, man, woman or cat, we can all learn a bit about how we dress from this prolific canine.

Bodhi (with the help of his human entourage) shares some advice with amNewYork on style, slobber and dressing for the city.

What are some of your favorite places to shop in NYC?

The thing about NYC is that you find yourself shopping even when you don’t plan for it. We love to walk around and people watch in the Lower East Side and Soho, so we often end up popping into our favorite shops when we’re out and about. Saturdays NYC, Shinola, and Todd Snyder are really cool stores to visit if you’re in the area. And nothing beats going vintage shopping in search of some buried treasure on the racks.

Nice menswear can get expensive, what are a few key pieces to invest in?

A great leather jacket will be your friend forever—it only gets better with age. We’d also recommend buying quality basics that a lot of guys don’t think about, like white dress shirts and plain tees. They provide the backbone for a lot of outfits, so you might as well spend some money to get those staples right.

Do you have any tricks for looking street stylish but also professional?

It really depends on your line of work. For someone with a more traditional 9-to-5, there might be more of a distinction between workplace and evening/weekend outfits, but in more casual and creative offices, street style is office style. That being said, it’s better to be a little overdressed than underdressed.

Wearing sweatpants all day all the time is ideal. Is there any way to do that and look good?

Sweatpants get a bad rap since we’re all so used to seeing the baggy workout variety, but a lot of brands are now making slim-fitting tapered joggers that look very stylish. Treat them like you would a pair of casual denim.

What elements of dog style can humans incorporate in their looks?

We can all learn a thing or two from how dogs go through life without a care in the world. Fashion should make you feel good, and when you feel good, you’ll look good.

As a dog you can’t really carry your own belongings, but New Yorkers have a lot on their hands. Any advice on man bags?

We totally approve of man bags; the trick is to carry with confidence. A lot of men go half-way by opting for a messenger bag, or something that feels like a backpack but doesn’t make them look like they’re in school. We say, if you’re going to carry a man bag, then carry it proudly.

The book suggests a lot of light colors for summer, but NYC is dirty! Any suggestions for keeping clothes clean? Or should New Yorkers just always wear black?

Sweat, slobber, and stains are a rite of passage in the summer and whether you’re a dog or a man, you’re going to get dirty. It’s how you handle the dirt that makes the difference. If you’re in the office, keep an extra clean shirt and tie at your desk for those warm weather accidents. Otherwise, maybe just hold the ketchup next time around.

What are your thoughts on ‘boyfriend jeans’?

Love them. Lots of menswear pieces are showing up in women’s fashion. like suits, blazers, oxford shirts, boyfriend-cut jeans, and brogues. They all look killer.
