Commerce giant Amazon will be leasing out space at Manhattan’s Hudson Yards and adding 1,500 jobs in the process, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
According to the report, Amazon has signed a lease for 335,000 square feet of offices. The deal comes more than a year after the company announced an ultimately-withdrawn plan to develop a massive campus on the Long Island City waterfront in Queens.
The Hudson Yards space will bring 1,500 workers in “the consumer and advertising departments,” CBS New York reported. It is scheduled to open in 2021.
The Long Island City plan announced last November — brokered between Amazon, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo — was anticipated to bring 25,000 jobs to the city and generate $27 billion in economic activity over a 25-year period.
But the proposal came with billions of dollars in tax credits to the world’s largest retail company — a provision that stoked anger from local residents and lawmakers. They believed the city and state should have invested the resources in addressing infrastructure and other local needs.
In the end, Amazon withdrew its Queens plan in February.
As for the Hudson Yards plan reported Friday, there are no tax incentives attached to the deal.
