Police officers shot an allegedly erratic man in the Bronx Sunday morning, authorities said.
Police sources told amNewYork Metro that the incident occurred at approximately 10 a.m. outside of 2685 Grand Concourse.
According to NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell, law enforcement received a 911 call from the alleged suspect’s father who said that his 42-year-old son was suffering from a manic episode and apparently threatened to kill.
“The caller describes his adult son having a medical episode, describing he feels he’s being followed, persecuted, and goes on to state if any cops show up here today ‘I will kill them,’” the chief recounted.
Officers from the 52nd Precinct arrived at the scene and spoke with the suspect’s father when the man emerged. Spotting the cops, Chell said the man produced a large kitchen knife from a bag and began marching toward them.
“The officers gave him numerous instructions to drop the knife, at which time he does not comply. They discharge their firearms, striking the subject,” Chell told members of the press Sunday afternoon.
According to Chell, this encounter took place in under 30 seconds and law enforcement officials have reviewed and will continue to review footage from the officers’ body-worn cameras. A knife was recovered at the scene.
At this time, the man is in critical condition and authorities are asking the public to avoid the area to make room for heavy police presence. Police also reported that the suspect did not live with his father, but he would often make visits.
This is the second police-involved shooting in the Bronx — and on Grand Concourse — in less than two months. On Feb. 5, NYPD officers shot at a man who allegedly turned his firearm on police after a reported assault near E. 153rd St and Grand Concourse.
