Coronavirus in NYC: Over 38,000 positive cases, death toll nears 1,000 citywide

The death toll from coronavirus in New York City rose by 124 people in six hours on Monday, according to the city’s Health Department.

In its stats filed at 4:30 p.m. on March 30, the city tallied 38,087 positive coronavirus cases and 914 deaths citywide. That was up from the 10:30 a.m. numbers which had 36,221 confirmed cases and 790 deaths.

Queens continued to have the most cases of the five boroughs in the 4:30 p.m. March 30 report, with 12,756 confirmed infections, 305 of which were fatal.

Brooklyn’s coronavirus case count surpassed 10,000 on Monday afternoon, with approximately 1,171 cases and 216 deaths.

The Bronx has the third-highest number of cases with 6,925 coronavirus patients and 215 deaths, followed by Manhattan with 6,060 patients and 119 deaths, and Staten Island with 2,140 infections and 58 fatalities.

Approximately 7,741 people have been hospitalized for coronavirus. The DOH stated that of the known coronavirus cases, 42% of those diagnosed in NYC were between the ages of 18 and 44. The 45 to 64 age group accounts for 35% of cases, followed by the 65 to 74 age group with 12% of known cases.

In its report Monday morning, the Department of Health reported that, of the 790 deaths, 639 people had an underlying illness paired with coronavirus. The DOH noted that 12 of the patients did not have an underlying condition – it is still being determined if the remaining 139 suffered from an underlying condition.
