More than 100 firefighters worked to extinguish a fire at 67-30 Metropolitan Ave. in Middle Village early Wednesday morning. The fire, which first broke out at 7:32 a.m. on Nov. 30, was deemed under control at 9:01 a.m., according to FDNY.
The fire was classified as a two-alarm fire at around 7:42 a.m. before being reclassified as a three alarm fire at approximately 8:21 a.m., according to FDNY.
Thirteen units consisting of 138 firefighters responded to the fire, which FDNY said was under control at 9:01 a.m. No injuries were initially reported.
The properties damaged from the fire include a deli and shuttered tavern.
As of 9:15 a.m., the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
“This morning at approximately 7:30 we received a phone call reporting a fire at 67-30 Metropolitan Ave.,” FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Frank Leeb said. “Our units arrived within four minutes and made quick work containing the fire considering how much fire we had on arrival in the rear of the deli and the adjoining exposure building. This fire went to a third alarm assignment. There are currently no injuries reported. The fire is now under control and the cause is under investigation by our FDNY Fire Marshals.”
As a result of the fire, the subway’s nearby M train had to limit services. According to New York City Transit, there was no service between Myrtle Avenue and Middle Village-Metropolitan Avenue. Middle Village-bound M trains were ending at Broadway Junction on the J line.
Additionally, New York City Transit announced that the Q38 and Q67 bus routes have been detoured. The Q38 will not be stopping between 69th Street and 66th Road and Metropolitan Avenue at 62nd and Fresh Pond Road. The Q67 won’t be stopping between Metropolitan Avenue and 62nd Street and 69th Street and 62nd Avenue. They recommended boarding buses along Eliot Avenue.
