A speeding driver died and his passenger was injured after he flipped his car on the Harlem River Drive early Monday morning, July 19.

New Jersey resident Joseph Edlawn, 34, was driving at a high speed heading north at around 1:40 a.m. when he tried to exit at East 125th Street, according to police reports.

As he drove down the exit ramp, he hit the curb causing the car to flip over several times into the northbound Second Avenue ramp and coming to a rest on its roof on the northbound Harlem River Drive.

Edlawn wasn’t wearing his seatbelt, so he was ejected through the moon roof during car rolling over, according to the authorities. Paramedics rushed to the scene and brought Edlawn to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem where he was pronounced dead.

His 28-year-old female passenger had her seatbelt on and only had minor injuries, but paramedics also brought her to the uptown public hospital.

The dramatic crash follows a lethal weekend on New York City’s streets, starting with a sports car driver who slammed into a Long Island Rail Road track pillar in Brooklyn Saturday, a driver fatally hitting a man lying in a Queens crosswalk Sunday morning, and an allegedly intoxicated motorist hit a Citi Bike rider in Manhattan later that morning.
